But wasn't the plan for them to get drunk and then have empty sex on the floor?

I always thought it a bit unfair when Cyn blew off Brand after their first date. It wasn't really his fault, when you look back. She enjoyed the date up until it started to rain (though Cyn did find having dinner music consisting of bagpipes and a tuba a little... odd). And I think I complained before about her blaming Brand for her locking her keys in the car.

Really, it was a good date other than the end, and to write off the entire date (and dating Brand) because of that was... petty, at best. Of course, Brand didn't act entirely mature after that, but it wasn't like there was a major blowup between them. But she did give him the "let's be friends" speech. And she had been interested in dating him before this point... it's just that after the date and being rained out... well, it tainted her interest in him.

Still, I understand why she freaked when she found out Brand was sleeping with Nicola (who's married to a college friend of his). Especially as she'd freaked before during the LARP (Live Action Role-Playing) that they'd done earlier (Nicola had, in character, "seduced" Brand's character in the LARP and Cyn misconstrued it to Brand putting the moves on a married woman). (The thing is, I think he thought the ring was "in character" at first or so I think. And the nod to El Goonish Shive was a cute touch afterward.)

So after the latest game, Cyn and Brand are locked in the store together by well-meaning friends, with a bottle of booze and two shot glasses, so they can work through their differences. And it does work. Cyn learns that Nicola pursued Brand, and that Brand feels creeped out by this affair almost as much as Cyn is. (Indeed, I'd not be surprised if Brand tells Nicola afterward that he's not going to sleep with her again.)

As the romantic at heart, I can't help but hope that maybe Brand and Cyn can work things out. Hey, I have a thing about attractive red-haired gamer chicks. *grin* (Well, any gamer chick really, they're such a rare species....)

That's what Aunties do best!

(From The Devil's Panties. Click on image to see full-sized image.)

I have to admit that I enjoy being around my friends kids. At times I wish I were a dad. Heh... they talk about women getting "the itch" but to be honest, it's something that transcends gender, the desire to have a child to raise, to tuck into bed, to tell stories with and so forth. Of course, I also have been around my friends kids enough to see the... not so pleasant side of it. Changing diapers when they're young, the tantrums, the screaming... but ask any parent, and they'll usually admit it's worth it.

But in the meantime... I enjoy being with my friends and their kids. Maybe it's because I can leave afterward. *evil grin* But still... it's a lot of fun playing with them, especially when they're young.

Jennie no doubt feels the same way as I do. You can tell how much she loves her niece and nephew. And going to a Rennfaire with them... she's sharing something she enjoys with her sister's children. (Of course, most of the Rennfaires I've been to haven't had rides, but still... *grin*)

The final panel of today's comic just so sums it up. Jenn picking up her nephew and twirling him around in circles... that's just plain fun! Yeah, it wears you out quickly and the kid wants more... but really, it's kind of sweet... especially in that with all the choices of rides to go on... Auntie Jenn is his favorite ride of all.

*sigh* Now I want to visit one of my friends and go to the playground with her and her son. *grin*
