Hey, I remember her...

Heh. It's been a while since we've had a Monica-centric storyline, and personally, it's about time. Not that I mind the story about Heather and Shelly, but their story has been fairly self-contained, and I miss hearing about the other characters of Wapsi Square.
What's more, this is a pleasant nod at a previous storyline, in which Monica was warned of her higher cholesterol. Even though her weight is fine, she was told she had to exercise, and her boyfriend Kevin offered to help. (And no, he didn't offer to help through lots of sex. Though she did claim that as an excuse as to not exercising, wily girl that she is.)
Naturally, Monica has to do things her own way, and she goes roller-skating instead of jogging... and takes her dog Dietzel along to pull her along. Well... I suppose trying to keep her balance might be a bit of exercise... but she decides to treat herself to something that probably would help spike her cholesterol.
(I wonder just how long Kevin and Monica will be going out... because one thing I learned is not to tell your girlfriend to do something, be it stop smoking, eat healthier, or what have you. Kevin means well but... *winces* wrestling with your girlfriend to pull ice cream away from her is not exactly the most endearing thing to do.)
In the end, it works out. Though I am left to wonder... what happened to her skates? Because she's running after Kevin at the end... and it's rather hard to run in skates. (Though you *can* build up a good speed racing after someone...)
As an aside, Wapsi Square is leaving Keenspot to go Indie. There are rumors of a new collective of webcomics forming, with such big names as Schlock Mercenary, Shortpacked/It's Walky, and Melonpool, (along as Wapsi Square) being part of this collective. The URL was http://www.blanklabelcomics.com/community/memberlist.php and when I first visited it, I was able to view quite a few names. Now the site refuses to allow people to view its contents. Whether this was a joke or is an actual new webcomic collective remains to be seen.
In any event, I'm sure Wapsi Square will do fine outside the Keenspot collective, and I look forward to reading next week's comics. No doubt we'll switch to another story (maybe back to Heather and Shelly again), and leave Kevin to escaping his girlfriend's wrath. Though it would be nice to see Monica calm down and realize Kevin was right about this... but after getting a face full of ice cream, I doubt that will happen. *grin*

Side note: Seems I had Monica's boyfriend's name wrong. It's Kevin, not Keith. It's fixed now. Also, her dog is named Dietzel. Er... whoops? Sorry about that... *sigh* Rob

Greystone Inn has long been a staple of my webcomic reading. So long, in fact, that I don't remember when I first started reading it. Guigar and the comic was just... there. I'm sorry to say it never really caught my attention. There were no great moments that made me want to read the next strip. There were no horrible moments that made me want to quit. It was a quiet and amusing comic that could easily be found in any newspaper.
Maybe that was its problem. Greystone Inn's cast grew, but the storylines just never really caught my attention. It was fun... but it never truly caught my interest. I'm not sure if the storylines were too diverse or if the cast grew too big or just why it didn't become something big... but it just didn't. However, on the plus side it never lost my attention either.
The thing is, Brad Guigar realizes this. Greystone Inn is ending... but only the "strip-within-a-strip" concept. The cast itself is continuing on, and the comic is going to become something different, possibly following the adventures of Lightning Lass, or maybe of Mac and Sam as they explore parenthood, or maybe even remaining the ensemble cast with rotating storylines and the like, as they find new jobs and continue with life. He's still making up his mind. Whatever he chooses, however, he admits that Argus the Gargoyle will be along for the ride, no matter what.
Whatever happens, I look forward to it. And maybe Brad will find the formula that works and turns Greystone Inn from an amusing little comic I read but don't need... to something that ignites passions and gets people excited. I hope he does.
